Transport in Chile

There are a variety of travel options to suit different itineraries, budgets, and travel styles.

The best way to get around depends on your destinations within this long and diverse country. Here are the most effective methods:

Air Transport in Chile

Given Chile’s length (over 4,300 km), flying is often the fastest way to travel between distant regions, such as Santiago and Patagonia or the Atacama Desert.

  • Airlines: LATAM, Sky Airlines, and JetSMART offer domestic flights.
  • Tips:
    • Book in advance for lower prices.
    • Use Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez Airport as your hub.
  • Best for: Long distances, such as Santiago to Punta Arenas or Calama.

Bus Transport in Chile

Chile’s bus network is reliable, affordable, and covers almost every part of the country. Buses are equipped with reclining seats and sometimes even beds (cama or semi-cama options).

  • Companies: TurBus and Pullman Bus are among the most popular.
  • Tips:
    • Overnight buses are an excellent option for saving on accommodation while covering long distances.
    • Tickets can often be booked online or at bus terminals.
  • Best for: Medium-to-long-distance travel on a budget.

Driving (Car Rentals)

Renting a car is ideal for exploring remote areas like the Carretera Austral, Torres del Paine, or wine regions.

  • Considerations:
    • Roads are well-maintained in central Chile but can be challenging in Patagonia or remote areas.
    • Be prepared for tolls on major highways.
  • Best for: Flexibility and exploring rural areas or national parks.

Local Public Transport in Cities

  • Santiago: The metro system is efficient and safe. Buses and shared taxis (colectivos) are also common. Use the Bip! card for easy access.
  • Other Cities: Public buses and taxis are the primary modes of transport.

Trains

Chile has a limited rail system, but the train from Santiago to Chillán is a comfortable and scenic option.

  • Best for: Central valley travel.

Boat Travel

In southern Chile, ferries are a lifeline for accessing remote regions, including the Patagonian fjords and islands.

  • Companies: Navimag and Transbordadora Austral Broom.
  • Best for: Exploring the Patagonian waterways.

Cycling and Trekking

For outdoor enthusiasts, cycling and trekking are popular ways to explore regions like Torres del Paine, the Atacama, or the Lake District.

Additional Tips

  • Seasons Matter: Some routes (especially in Patagonia) are only accessible during the summer months (November to March).
  • Safety: Chile is considered safe for travelers, but always take standard precautions.
  • Language: Knowing basic Spanish is helpful, especially in rural areas.

For efficient travel across Chile, combining flights for long distances with buses or car rentals for local exploration is often the best approach.
